Overview
Splendor is one of the great gateway games of all time, and one of my favorites too. Splendor won the prestigous Spiel des Jahres, and for good reason. It’s the epitome of an accessible, easy to learn, hard to master game. The components are simple: nice chunky poker chips, a small deck of cards, and a few square tiles. But the box is HUGE for the amount of stuff that’s inside. I get it. It’s all got to do with shelf presence in the store. But now that game is home, I wanted it to take up less space for storage and portability. So I whipped up this storage solution for anyone else who feels the same. Here it is loaded up.
I also love boxes that have nice nested stackable boxes inside of them. It just feels so right to me. So I designed this organizer so that it’s a series of stacking trays with a nice sliding lid. The chip racks go in first, and there are fingerpulls to make them easier to get out. In a 4 player game you use all of the chips, so you can just pull the two racks and set them on the table. No need to unload the chips. The cards and tiles go in a separate caddy that sits on top, with a support rail modeled into the case.
Printing
To print this organizer, print one of each part, except for the chip rack. Print two chip racks. On my Prusa XL I can comfortably fit all of the parts on the build plate at once, including two copies of the chip rack. With the standard 0.4mm nozzle, it’s about a 10 hour print. But I currently have a bigger 0.6mm nozzle loaded into my printer and that brings total print time down to about 7 hours 20 minutes. This being a functional print with mostly big square walls, there’s very little difference in print quality.
You may have noticed the two holes in the lid. I had originally thought I was going to add a pull to the top of the lid, but after many years of using the organizer as is, I never needed it. Feel free to add your own pull there or use some STL editing software to fill in those holes.
Like most of my functional prints, there’s NO SUPPORTS required, and using a draft printing profile will yield perfectly acceptable results.
